Does It Plug Straight In?
No, if it was that easy it would have been done years ago.
What Stuff Do I Need?
Although you are expecting me to say a soldering iron etc, all you need is a knife and file.
Does It Work 100% Correctly?
No it doesn't, details of what does and doesn't work are at the bottom of this how2.
OK, What Do I Do?
Remove the original speedo by following the how2
Unclip the rev counter connector and the main connections, this has a clip that
needs to be pushed down so that a lever can slide over to release the block.
You now have to adapt the plastic wiring block very slightly.
The first picture shows the normal connector looking face on with the lever upwards.
The second picture shows the 2 plastic tabs that should be removed with a knife and file.
The third picture shows the shape of the socket used on the Roadster speedo.
This shows the plug with the tabs removed.
It's plain to see that with the top tabs in place, it cannot be pushed into the
Roadster speedo socket. Once the tabs have been removed it plugs in perfectly.
OK Now The Complicated Bit, Right?
Nope, that is it. Turn your car on and the Roadster speedo will spring into life.
No seriously, it really will, honest.

Old Problems - Now Fixed
Speedo inaccurate in gear 5 and 6
The original speedo I was using was showing wildly inaccurate speeds in higher gears.
I decided that it was probably either due to the ECU coding or the speedo coding.
Because the speedo I was using was a Brabus unit, it had a wider range, going to 140mph
where the standard Roadster speedo only went to 120mph. This made a difference.
After obtaining a standard 120mph speedo I fitted it to find it showed the correct speed.

Fuel level display
Although the fuel pump looks the same between the Roadster and the Fortwo there is a difference. The fuel level sensor is more accurate as it has a much wider range variable resistor.
There is a possibility of a fix for this one using a resistor to lower the voltage or a basic microprocessor to change a set of values to another. Of course the easiest thing to do is to fit a Roadster fuel sensor.
It is a fairly easy swap over but does mean you have to use the Roadster speedo all the time.
Mileage
The rumour has it that the mileage is stored in the ECU, the SAM and the speedo unit, if you change the speedo the car will use the highest mileage from the 3 places.
I have proved this to be false. When I plug the Roadster speedo into the For2,
all you get is --------- instead of any mileage.
From what I can work out, the VIN code is programmed into the speedo.
When the codes don't match, no mileage is displayed.
I think this should be fixable. Smart must be able to code new speedos to old cars if one should break so there is no reason it couldn't be coded with a new VIN and mileage.
HELP!
If you should attempt this and manage to fix any of the problems I would appreciate it if you would let me know, if I sort out any fixes myself, I will put them up here ASAP.
Fitting the speedo to the For2
You are on your own with this one. Personally I got another For2 speedo surround from my friends atwww.ChequeredFlagUK.co.uk , butchered the base from the Roadster, glued the 2 together and packed it full of resin filler. It's not pretty but it works.
After a coat of paint it will look way better.
