Roadster Steering Rack Bushes
Changing the steering rack bushes on the Roadster can make the steering feel more accurate
Make sure the wheels are straight. Tie the steering wheel to the seat adjuster so it can't
move. Open the bonnet and remove the liner and remove the battery to give yourself more room.
There is a panel partially covering the steering rack that needs to be removed. Look at the ends.
Remove the fixings from each end.
Then pull the panel out of the way.
Remove the 2 nuts and bolts at each end. (16mm and E12 I think).
Remove the nut and bolt from the lowest universal joint...
... and flip it out of the way.
Jack the front of the car up, you don't have to remove the wheels.
The rack can now be pulled up and out of the beam.
Rotate the rack backwards so you can see the full face of the bushes.
Wedge it in place with something so it doesn't move around.
Get a drill and a 5mm drill bit and bore holes through the rubber all the way around.
You can then push the bushing out.
Ensure the holes are clean...
...and push a plastic insert into the front and back of the hole and then
push the metal tube all the way in the new inserts until it is flush.
You can now refit the steering rack and bolt it down. Job Done.
