Coolant Draining/Filling
The coolant doesn't need changing that often but it's handy to know how to do it.

Draining

The best way to drain the system is at its lowest point, in the smart's case they
have actually installed a coolant drain plug that can be removed with an allen key.

With the engine cold, undo the coolant drain plug. Remember to put a container underneath it to catch the old coolant. Access the coolant expansion tank by following
this how2 and twist off the cap. As soon as you take it off, the coolant will quickly drain from the engine.

The petrol smart uses 4.2 litres and the diesel uses 4.5 litres of mixed coolant.

Refilling Or Topping Up The Coolant

Replace the drain plug temporarily and fill the coolant expansion tank to the maximum line.
The coolant expansion tank is at the front of the car and can be found here.
Undo the drain plug a bit until coolant starts to seep from it, do the drain plug up tight.

Refil back to the maximum mark, if you have the front panel off you can massage the pipes to help the flow around the system. Keep refilling the expansion tank to the max mark.

It is important now to remove the thermostat as a large air lock always appears here. Click here.

Where Is The Coolant Expansion Tank?

The position varies between the fortwo and the Roadster, click here to see the position.

Airlocks

To banish any airlocks that occur, just have a look
here.

Warning

Do not leave the collected coolant in an open container that can be accessed
by animals, the antifreeze is sweet and many a pet has died drinking it.

Coolant Specs

The coolant composition must be a 50:50 ratio (half and half). Half coolant, half water.
The coolant contains antifreeze and anticorrosion agents and should conform
to specification sheet number 325.0 or premixed coolant spec sheet 326.0

Generally, standard drinking water is fine to use as long as you don't live in a hard water area.
If you do, consider using distilled water available from most car shops.
