Some smarts don't have to pay the London congestion charge but most do

What Is The Congestion Charge?

It's a way that the English government can get more money from drivers. The name would suggest
that it is in place to reduce congestion but the exemption is based on exhaust emissions.

Congestion Charge Exemption

All electric cars and (proper) hybrid engine cars do not have to pay this charge. Considering
that most hybrid vehicles are hunking great 4x4's I can't see how this would reduce congestion
in the capital. Some newer Euro5 low CO2 cars are free too and some are smarts.

How Much, When and Where?

£10 a day if you drive in London between 07:00 and 18:00 on a weekday.

Hybrids Are Exempt, Does This Mean My MHD is exempt?

Not necessarily. The MHD (Micro Hybrid Drive) isn't actually a hybrid, it's a marketing ploy.

What Smarts Are Exempt?

Smart 451 Fortwo 71bhp MHD from September 2010 onwards,
Petrol Euro5 exhaust. 97g/km - 100g/km CO2 emissions.

Smart 451 Fortwo 54bhp Diesel from September 2009 onwards
Diesel Euro5 exhaust. 86g/km - 89g/km CO2 emissions

Smart Fortwo ED (Electric Drive) all models.

Is That All?

Yep. The 45bhp diesel 451 owners have to pay along with all the owners of MHD's made
before September 2010. All 450's, all Forfours and all Roadsters have to pay. Crazy huh!
