Loosen the wheel nuts, jack up the car and remove the wheel. The drum is held on with 2x Torx40 screws.

Remove them both. You may have to pull the handbrake on hard to stop the drum spinning.

Chog the front wheels and then release the handbrake. The drum should then pull off. Mine didn’t. The centre spigot was rusty. I had to heat it with a gas torch and then pound it with a rubber hammer.

Clean up everything and copper grease the mating faces before refitting (a very light coat is fine).

They Look Shit

Yep, they don’t handle the corrosion very well. Time to repaint them.

The issue with this design is all of those fins. It makes it hard to rub them down like you would with smooth drums. Sand paper isn’t going to reach. I’d recommend a wire wheel or a sand blaster. I used walnut shell in a sand blaster. It wasn’t great but that’s because the gun was cheap crap.

Once it’s cleaned up, time to respray. Most people will just get a spray can or some brush on metal paint. I decided to try power coating. I used the EasyCoat gun. Similar systems can be bought on Amazon.

Spray on the powdered paint…

…and then throw it in the oven.

I put it up to full power and watched for the powdered paint to flow and gloss over. This takes about 10 minutes. Then you leave it in the oven for 10 more minutes. Turn the oven off and open the door. Let the drum cool.

The quality of your finish will depend on the quality of your original clean up and how bad the corrosion is.

Bolt it all back in place and refit the wheel.

Better than rusty.

Can I Just Use The Oven In My Kitchen?

Technically yes but it’s really not recommended. No food cooked in that oven afterwards will ever be right. Get yourself a mini oven to put in your workshop. I bought the 28 litre VonShef but you can get bigger and smaller.

You are only limited by the size of the oven so get the biggest one you’d need.
