Starting And Driving The Smart
The Immobiliser

The first thing to do before trying to start the car is to disable the immobiliser. The immobiliser automatically turns on when the car is locked or if the car is left open and unstarted for up to five minutes.

To turn the immobilizer off, just press the unlock button on the key.

If you attempt to start the car and a key symbol appears on the speedo display and you hear three beeps, it means the immobiliser is active. To turn it off, do the following:

Turn the ignition key to position 0.
Press the unlock button on the key, a single beep will be heard.
Turn the key back to position 1.

A symbol will be displayed on the speedo display.The symbol will either be an R, N or a 1.

R = Reverse.
N = Neutral.
1 = Gear 1.

Starting The Car

With the immobiliser disabled insert the key into the ignition. Turn it to position 1. Hold your foot on the brake pedal and push the gear lever to the neutral position. When it is in neutral an N will appear on the speedo display. You can now turn the key to position 2 briefly and the car will start the engine.

On the diesel smart, as you turn the key to position 1 the preheater light will come on. When this light goes out you can turn the key briefly to position 2 to start the car.

Selecting Gear And Pulling Away

With the engine started and the car in neutral you have to select either 1st gear or reverse to get the car moving. To select reverse, hold down the foot brake and pull the stick back from neutral. The display will change from N to R. To select first you can push the gear stick over from neutral, if you don’t hold down the brake pedal you will select no gears and a 0 will show on the speedo,
push the gear stick forwards to select 1. If you hold down the brake when moving over from neutral, first gear is automatically selected.

With the appropriate gear selected, release the hand brake and lightly press the accelerator to drive in the direction selected.

Stopping The Car

Bring the car to a halt with the foot brake. Apply the handbrake, hold your foot on the brake pedal and put the gear stick into neutral and then reverse. An N then an R will appear on the speedo display, turn the key to position 0 and remove the key.

Important Information

The car will only start if it is in neutral.
Always turn the car off with the gear stick in the reverse position.
You must hold the brake down when shifting from neutral to reverse.
You must hold the brake down when shifting from reverse to neutral.

Changing Gears

The are 4 possible ways to change gears in the smart, not all are necessarily available.

Automatic – changes up and down gear by itself.
Manual – push the gearstick forward to change up gear and pull back to change down.
Paddles – the right paddle changes up and the left paddle changes down.
Redline – when the rev counter reaches the redline it will change up to save the engine.

When you are driving in manual mode you will notice that a flashing arrow will sometimes appear in the speedo display. This arrow will either point up or down. These are merely recommendations to change up or down a gear. The longer you own a smart, the more you will ignore them.

In automatic mode you don’t need to change gears but if you do use the gear stick to select a gear whilst in automatic, it will change gear and cancel auto and put you back into manual. To switch between auto and manual you simply press the button on the side of the gear stick briefly, this switch will toggle between the two modes.

In automatic mode, an A is displayed on the speedo display.

Driving Off Uphill

The 700cc smarts has a “hill start assist” function which holds the brake on for 0.7 of a second after you release the brake pedal. This keeps the car stationary on the hill long enough for you to move your foot over onto the accelerator and apply appropriate pressure to build up the revs to pull away.

The hill start assist is inactive if the handbrake is on.

Automatic Change Down

As the revs drop and the car slows, the gearbox will automatically change down a gear to stop the engine from stalling. As you pull up and stop the car the gearbox will automatically select 1st gear ready for you to pull away again.
