Recommended Brake Fluid
Smart recommend MB 331.0 brake fluid which is one of the following part numbers:
000 989 08 07
000 989 56 05
If you search MB331.0 on eBay, you’ll find a range of options.
However, any DOT 4 will work perfectly in all smarts but do make sure it’s DOT4.
DOT3, DOT4, DOT5, DOT5.1
DOT4 brake fluid and brake systems are compatible with DOT3, DOT4 and DOT5.1
DO NOT USE DOT5 as it’s silicone based and not compatible with the existing fluid.
DOT3 can be used but not recommended as it has a lower boiling point compared to DOT4
DOT5.1 has a higher boiling point and is compatible with your car’s existing fluid but to be honest, it’s not really worth the time, money and effort.
Why Not?
Smarts aren’t quick or heavy so they don’t need high performance brake fluid.
Adding a few glugs of DOT5.1 into your brake system isn’t going to positively affect anything. Unless you are doing a full fluid change, it’s not worth it.
Also, DOT5.1 is more expensive.
