Evilution Video

You may have seen this video previously when I added it to the 451 filter change page. In the video you see me fit the PiperCross replacement filter. It’s an easy process.

Fitting is in the realms of anyone wishing to do the filter replacement, no special tools required.

Construction

These filters are manufactured from multiple layers of patented open-cell polyurethane foam, they allow a 30% greater airflow, retain more dirt and filter out smaller particles  compared to the standard filter. All this means is each layer of foam has a smaller cell structure than the last allowing it to filter large, medium then small particles. This method stops it becoming clogged so quickly and allows a greater air flow throughout its use.

Overview

The first thing you will notice is the colour. Most foam filter companies make their filters black. With a coloured foam section you can see at a glance if it needs cleaning.

Spanning the foam structure is the reinforcing mesh, this keeps the foam in place and secures it to the  moulded foam rubber gasket.

The moulded foam gasket that runs around the outside is a closed cell foam rubber that stops air from going around the filter instead of through it. This gasket holds it in place inside the air box stopping movement and water ingress.

The underside of the filter is shaped into ten separate 4 sided pyramids in a 2×5 arrangement. This isn’t done to look good, it is to increase the filtering surface area of the filter.

What About Service Time?

In the service schedule it states that on certain services you should change the filter. If you fit a PiperCross filter this isn’t necessary, you just have to give it a clean.

Using warm running water from a tap or shower head (not a pressure washer), hold the coloured side in the water flow and allow the water to wet every part. This water flow dislodges the dirt that has been stored in the foam. You shouldn’t run water through it the other way as it can push the larger dirt into the small cells of the foam and clog it up.

When the water runs clear, immerse the filter in warm water and gently massage the foam. Remove the filter from the water and allow to dry naturally, do NOT apply heat to the filter, this could damage the foam.

Foam filters can be used dry or oiled. Oiled filters can retain more dirt but you will need to buy the oil separately from PiperCross, Halfords or Ebay etc. If you do re-oil the filter, follow the instructions on the can. Do not over oil as it can reduce air flow.

Conclusion

PiperCross have been making excellent filters for years and they are a good honest British company. The filter was a perfect fit, power will be marginally increased and will keep your engine cleaner.

Smart Mods Ltd sell this filter for only £39 which includes delivery. This is cheaper than any other performance replacement filter I have seen. Apart from the performance, excellent fitting and low price, there was a notable increase in induction noise which is always nice to hear. Removing the resonator chambers from the air inlet pipe will increase it even more so.

So, Worth Getting?

If you are going to fit a performance filter, why pay more than you have to? I have had mine fitted now for some time and am very happy with it. Just click the banner at the top of the page to visit the SmartMods site.
