Because the smart is generally hard to work on, it just wouldn’t be right if changing the oil pump was an easy task. So it’s no surprise to find out that it’s a lot of work to get to but very simple to actually change.

Remove the air inlet manifold, rocker cover, camshaft, cylinder head, alternator, oil sump pan and timing chain cover.
You’ll be presented with the oil pump chain running from the crankshaft sprocket to the oil pump sprocket.

Take the T45 bolt out of the centre of the oil pump sprocket… (20Nm on refitting)…

…and pull the sprocket off and remove the chain.
