451 ESP Removal
In case you need to spin the wheels to get you out of snow and ice or if you are running your car on a dyno, you need to disable the ESP system.
Remember where you read this first as I'm sure it will soon feature on other sites.
It is very important that you realise that following this guide will also turn off ABS.
It is purely intended for getting out of snow and ice or running on a dyno.
Of course, having a little play in an empty snowy car park is ok.
It is not recommended for every day driving. The safety systems are there to help you.
ESP Removal - 451 - 2009 On
A method discovered by a Canadian smart owner (will add a credit when I know who).
This method does not seem to work on early versions. 2009 onwards is my best guess.
If you try it, please let me know if it works or not and the year of your car.
Place the key in the ignition. Press and hold both buttons on the speedo.
Turn the key to position 1 and wait. Eventually the symbol in the middle of the speedo
will start to flash. Once it starts flashing, start the car. The ESP is now off.
To turn the ESP back on, just turn the car off and on again.
ESP Removal - 451 - All Models
This is for the newer design smart fortwo 451 only and not for the old 700cc smart.
With the ignition turned off, locate the fuse box under the dashboard and remove fuse 11.
Now start the car as normal.
The ESP triangle light will stay lit to tell you it is inactive.
Turning The ESP Back On
Turn the car off and ensure the ignition is turned to position 0.
Reinsert fuse 11 and restart the car. The ESP light turn off as normal.
Under no circumstances must the fuse be removed or inserted with the ignition on.
