Are you fitting a non standard stereo?

Fortwo (450) & Roadster.

If you replace the standard 450 or 452 Grundig stereo it will almost certainly work fine to a point.
The main problem is that all the presets are lost every time the car is turned off.

Not to worry, it's simple to fix.

You need to swap the permanent and the ignition supply, this can be done by
inserting a paper clip into the front of the plug at connections A4 and A7 to push
the little clip down so the terminal can be pulled out the back of the ISO plug.

Once they are both out just swap them over and the job is done.

Anything else to consider?

Funny you should say that, yes! Your new head unit will probably output the rear
signals to your tweeters as the smart doesn't have rear speakers.

The signal will be full range and could damage your tweeters unless you add a
high frequency crossover. This only allows the higher notes to reach the tweeter.

Aftermarket Ideal Pinout

Although ISO is a standard, there is a lot of interpretation in the pinout, this is the layout.

The true ISO pinout is as seen below. You have a possibility of 2 mutes and speed
increased volume input on the first 3 pins. Not all stereos will have this function.

Pin Number Wire Colour Connection
A1   Speed volume
A2
Mute 1
A3   Mute 2
A4 Yellow 12v Permanent
A5 Blue  Remote Out
A6 Orange Lighting Input
A7 Red 12v Switched
A8 Black Earth
B1 Yellow Tweeter Right +
B2 Yellow/Black Tweeter Right -
B3 Green/Yellow Speaker Right +
B4 Grey/Green Speaker Right -
B5 Green/Blue Speaker Left +
B6 Grey/Brown Speaker Left -
B7 Green Tweeter Left +
B8 Green/Black Tweeter Left -

Pins A4 to A8 are usually as described above. Note that the 450 and 452 12v wires are opposite.

Fortwo 451 (2007 - 2010)

The  Visteon stereo already has the permanent live attached to the correct A4 pin to power a
standard ISO stereo. However, the switched live needs to be swapped from A3 to A7.
Inserting a paper clip into the front of the plug at connections A3 to push
the little clip down so the terminal can be pulled out the back of the ISO plug.
Once the terminal has been pulled from A3 it can be pushed into A7. Job done.

Fortwo 451 Facelift (2010 onwards)

The Bosch Highline and Lowline stereos conform to the correct ISO standard.
This means that you should be able to plug most aftermarket stereos into
the smart standard wiring and not need to move any of the connections around.

Anything else to consider?

Well it depends how dynamic the sound is on your new stereo. The existing stereo uses the rear
speaker channels for the tweeters and instead of having a proper equaliser, it cheats by reducing
volume to the rear channels and therefore reducing the high frequencies.

Most aftermarket stereos will have proper EQs and a much wider front and rear sound which
can cause an odd delay (although very small) to the tweeters. To stop this I would
recommend using the same front channels for all of the speakers.

The standard 451 tweeters have a high frequency crossover already built in.
If you replace them with aftermarket ones, make sure they do or add them.

ForFour 454

If you are replacing the single DIN Radio 5 then you will need to find a switched live from
somewhere as the existing stereo has the permanent live at A4 but no switched wire at all.
This is because it is switched through the CAN bus. A switched live can usually be found
at the back of the cigarette lighter socket. The new switched live goes to pin A7.

If you are replacing a double DIN Radio 6 then you will need a Quadlock to ISO convertor.
As above, you will also need to locate a switched live wire for pin A7.
