Roadster Carpet Removal
Roadsters leak and the carpet holds all the water, eventually it starts to smell
Open the roof, remove the roof side bars, remove the seats using a Torx 45 screwdriver
and unbolt the seatbelt from the seat side using a 17mm hexagon socket. If you have
seat heaters or side airbags then you need to disconnect those too.
Just under the handbrake is a cap, lever this out and remove the Torx 15 screw underneath.
At the back of the handbrake surround is a catch that slides out as shown.
Pull the gear knob off (don't twist and don't press the button as you pull).
The surround now can be pulled to unclip at the front and slid forwards to to remove.
The carpet first needs to be pulled forwards over the handbrake which can be
done with the cover on. If you have the arm rest as shown you either have to
remove the handbrake grip or cut the carpet at the back. This can be held back
together with hook side velcro laid hook side down onto the split.
In each outside corner of the footwells are covers, they are held in with
2 push in plastic pins. Just pull the covers off and the pins disengage.
Pull the door seal up off of the lip...
..and you will see the plastic clips that hold the carpet in place. Remove the centre console.
Lift the carpet from the back, get in the car and stand on the bare metal with a foot either
side of the handbrake. Pull the carpet towards your stomach and the carpet should slide
out from the footwell. Carefully remove it from the car. Remember it will be wet and heavy.
Try not to drag it down the car or drip on the seats you removed.
Put the carpet somewhere warm and dry until there is no more water in the carpet backing.
I put mine in the conservatory...
...over a hot weekend and it was totally dry in 3 days and ready to put back into the car.
Fitting is the reverse of removal except the carpet is a lot lighter. The only real hard part is
getting the carpet up under the pedals again. With the seats out, if you have seat side airbags,
DON'T turn the key in the ignition or you will get an airbag error light come on.
If you decide to refit the seats with the carpet out, remember to reattach any wires and if you only replace the driver's seat, place all 4 bolts in the passenger side floor plan as although they are captive nuts, they can slide around and you will lose the threaded hole giving you more work to do.
With the carpet out, give the metal a good clean. Shake n vac or talcum powder on the carpet backing when dry will aid with making the carpet smell fresher when you put it back in.
